It's my birthday!

Time to look at the goals I set last year and see how I'm doing.

1). Job - Still have that kick-ass contract gig, but they cut my hours a few months ago. I have since landed a second part-time gig, also in my field, that is a W-2 gig so I'm not having to pay self-employment tax for about half my income, which is pretty sweet. Still hoping to turn one of these into something full-time with benefits.

2). Money - Paid down some debt, accumulated more debt (Medical, so at least I don't feel like it's my "fault"). But all my bills are getting paid at the moment, and I've got a bit of savings, too. Still also recovering from when my hours were cut.

3). Health - I did in fact finally find a good primary care physician, who started treating me for shit I suspect I've had for years. She also diagnosed me with an issue that needed surgery to correct -- nothing lifethreatening, but not elective, either. Surgery went fine, I have a cool scar. My Obamacare covered a bunch of it but there's a big chunk I'll have to pay myself, hence the medical debt I mentioned in the previous section. Already looking at ways to get this reduced or even forgiven, but it's a slow process.

Also, I started therapy last year, and HOLY FUCKNG SHIT has it made a difference in my life. Like many people, 2016 has been kind of a trash fire of a year, but I have so much more cope now. Because I found out that I needed surgery and that my hours were being cut on the same fucking day, y'all.

4). Travel - Between health and money, have not had the resources to take a trip aside from a three-day weekend a couple weeks ago.

Conclusion so far is that this year has sucked but I'm coping.

As a nice treat, I literally just found out one of my favorite performers is doing a last minute tour and will be performing in my town in a few weeks. (I've been stalking his FB for months waiting to see if he would play here.) I already got my ticket, should be a good time.

And I'm happy about it. This year so far has been SO MUCH BETTER than the past two years, personally and professionally. Here's to keeping this upswing going.

I want to set some goals for myself for the next five years, so I'm doing it here.

1). Job -- I have a really kick ass contract gig going, and I want to maintain it, or better yet, turn it into a full-time remote job with benefits.

2.) Money -- I want to pay off my debt, build up my savings, and look into buying either a condo or a small house (or I may just decide to keep renting, but somewhere slightly larger -- more room for my two indoor cats -- and covered reserved parking.) I hate chores and I want to do as few as possible, so if I bought something I'd need to factor in the cost of hiring people to do any and all renovating, as well as paying someone else to maintain my yard. Renting may just be less of a hassle in the end.

3.) Health -- I want to find a primary care doctor who is not an asshole, and work with them to get me referrals to specialists to get some things checked out. I suspect there are some undiagnosed issues I have (nothing life threatening though). I'm functional for now, but I'd rather just get this shit taken care of before they become big issues. I remember the joy of walking every where when I was in college, and even when I lived on the West Coast several years ago. I'd like to get back to a place where walking is fun for me, and not a chore.

4.) Travel -- I'd like to do more traveling. I haven't really for the past few years due to Money + Health, and I want to fix that. (Although I did just have a very fun trip with friends at the beginning of the month. I want to do more of that, and maybe visit some friends in more farflung cities.)

Yeah, I'm leaving this pretty late, but here you go.

Consumables. you really cannot go wrong with this. Care packages of consumables are great if you're not local. And I don't just mean sweets or cookies. I would fucking love it if someone made me a casserole or quiche or a meat pie or something savory (If you go this route, though, no peppers or peas. NO PEAS.) Cider is excellent as well.

Giftcards are great, for literally any amount. Seriously, $3 or $5 makes a difference to me. Places I shop: Walgreens, Target, Amazon, Trader Joes, Aldi, Torrid, AMC Theatres, Boston Market.

Take me out for a meal, one on one. Call or email me, plan out the day and time, basically initiate all the plan-making and do all the planning and confirmations, so all I have to do is say "Great I would love to" and then show up and then we get to hang out one on one and catch up.

Referrals. Think about who you know in your network who could A) use my services, and B) pay respectable rates. Then introduce us over email. If you're not sure exactly what I do besides "writer", hit me up and I'll tell you exactly what my ideal client looks like.

Art that you made. I have an art wall that I like to display art on that people I know created. It doesn't have to be something new you make just for me, I'm perfectly happy with a print of an already created piece. (That said, if you really want to make sure I love what you give me, show me 3-5 prints I can pick from and say "Professor, pick the one you like best" and then I will do that. :D)

I don't really need stuff -- my apartment is small and I'm constantly purging my belongings and getting rid of what I don't need. That said, there are a few things I'm looking for at the moment. Gently used is fine, as long as they work well.

- a rice cooker
- an electric kettle
- plain black picture frames for my art wall
- magnetic spice jars or a magnetic spice rack

And now, here is my ridiculous pie in the sky list:

- A full-time, W-2 remote work job in editorial or content development that pays well

- a fully paid vacation somewhere great with first-class airfare, or roomette accommodations on a train.

- part or all of my debt paid off

- A second cat who is awesome and gets along with my first cat

I still exist! While I haven't posted in ages, I do log in and read fairly often.

2013 was a terrible year for me. But to paraphrase something I read on the interwebs, 2013 is dead, and I'm still standing. I have achieved victory over my foe.

Here's hoping that 2014 is a much better year, for everyone.

I spent the day with friends, so I feel it's already off to a good start.
